Chevrolet will soon be offering a select number of 2016 Chevrolet Silverado trucks with eAssist technology. This partial hybrid electrical system is similar to that found in the Chevy Malibu Hybrid and the Chevy Volt. It will allow Chevrolet to offer an affordable pickup with the same sturdy capability and better fuel economy.
The mechanics behind the new Chevrolet eAssist system is a combination of a small lithium-ion battery pack with a 5.3L EcoTech V-8 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor enables an Active Fuel Management system to operate in 4-cylinder mode for longer periods of time to reduce fuel consumption. Additional fuel savings are achieved by a Stop/Start system that turns off the engine when stopped in traffic and turns it back on when the accelerator is pressed. The system also stores potentially lost energy with Regenerative Braking that converts energy created during braking into electricity that recharges the onboard battery.
The innovative eAssist system is lightweight and delivers an additional 13 horsepower and 44 lb-ft of torque from the electric motor. Chevrolet will equip approximately 500 Silverado trucks with eAssist and offer these new 2016 models exclusively through California dealers. Silverado eAssist trucks will be available for an additional $500 above comparably equipped two-wheel drive Silverado 1500 crew cab models. Depending on how well this new model is received, the manufacturer will consider adjusting production of future models in 2017.
“Silverado already leads the full-size truck segment in V8 fuel economy,” said Sandor Piszar, marketing director for Chevrolet Trucks. “For customers and small-business owners who use their trucks for more urban driving, the addition of eAssist can further reduce their fuel costs without sacrificing the utility they expect in a full-size truck.”
Chevrolet is continually expanding its electric vehicle portfolio to include electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Spark EV and upcoming Bolt EV as well as extended-range electric models like the Chevrolet Volt and the Chevy Malibu Hybrid. The new 2016 Chevrolet Silverado with eAssist technology is a welcomed addition to the electric-hybrid Chevy lineup as the first ever Chevrolet truck to join the ranks.
